GD is test to know your leadership qualities

We were a group of ten aspirants and were given GD topic “ Flexi office timings” The topic was very easy,  that was our first reaction to each other and had a broad smile before greeting each other before GD selection panel.

We all spoke well and consumed our allotted time in perfect way while concluding that we don’t mind not having fixed salary with variable packages but we positively need flexi office timings so that we can enjoy our personal life.

But to our shock when the result was announced and we all as a group were rejected by GD panel as they were strictly adhering to their set parameters.

Later we realized that we almost shouted and to derive points we started debating and also went out of focus from the topic.

Group Discussion is not a debate but a discussion. GD panel is looking in to your skill set of leadership and communication qualities within a stipulated time.

MBA exams with percentile or percentage?

Most of times MBA aspirants are not aware of difference between percentile and percentage.

Let us understand that percentage is actually the proportion to 100 as reference figure. Thus 28 marks out of 40 mean 70% or 70 marks out of 100.

Now on percentile - suppose that your score on a test is in the 90th percentile. That means you scored better than 90% of the others who took the test.

It is perceived that in tough competitive exams like CAT which is taken by approximately two lac twenty thousand aspirants, percentile parameter works better way as exam is tough and students may not score that high individually so best among the entire group population can be selected for final GD & PI.  Hence, it can also be said that percentile basis becomes tougher than percentage   as you as student may lose the game by point one percent number also.

University exams and competitive exams have completely different matrix. In competitive exams you are competing with others and ensuring that you are not left out of competition whereas in university exams even if you score one percent higher or lower, you are passing through and are eligible for degree.

MBA gives you cutting edge

The other day when I joined pharmaceutical company in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune , I was the youngest as Management Trainee but sooner I found that I am amongst young men who were in their late twenties or early thirties. All of us were working in Sales Department and had to visit our customers who were essentially Doctors.

My colleagues who were non MBAs wondered that why I joined company after having MBA degree from prestigious B school?  Even I wondered what is that which I can do differently to prove the point to my organization that management of customers also takes you a mile extra.

Gradually I customized customers and segmented them as per our product mix, in addition to this we targeted them with limited but relevant sales promotional material which competitors did not think of. All efforts culminated not only for capturing extra market share but we created new platform for the launch of new products also as per demand of market.

I realized that it is my MBA education which shaped my DNA to think and act differently, analyze, think beyond horizon and communicate effectively.
