GD / Group Discussion Tips

The other day when I got invitation letter to attend GD, I felt happy as that heralded my admission process for MBA almost getting completed. But with the immediate other thought which gave shiver in my spine was that if I am rejected then I will be out of competition. 

The above happens with all of us but I would share actual reality of attending Group Discussion / GD. The moment I was in room where selection panel was sitting, we were put at ease and in such a polite & in most courteous way; we were given GD Topic with usual conditioning of time etc. 

We, as group started discussion in a way as if we were friend to each other but we never lost focus on topic and all of us got our own individual time to say and elaborate on topic. We all concluded in the best manner and consensus was achieved to communicate one line message on the GD topic.

Later, we realized that our discussion with focus on topic, domain knowledge and Interpersonal skills helped us to reach consensus. These were the turning points which gave us success at Group Discussion.  

Are you aware of MBA admission cycle?

At present MBA admissions are in full swing. Most of the institutes are conducting final GD & PI rounds for intake of students. MBA admission process started in last October with CAT being conducted with a window of 35 days. Later, exams like XAT, NMAT, SNAP, MAT, CMAT, ATMA, and MHCET were conducted and lacs of aspirants have appeared in these tests.

In view to seek MBA admission it is must for aspirant to plan study with holistic approach. These entrance tests test you on your analytical abilities, communication, speed, mental agility with overall general awareness.

Next cycle of MBA admissions will again start with the notification coming out for CAT 2012 in coming August. Get prepared for taking on various exams as time is not in abundance for you. Why Leadership Quality is judged in Group Discussion?

GD or Group Discussion is a test of checking your nerves in crunch situations. How you react, behave in a particular situation matters a lot. In businesses many a times, as Manager you are bound to handle situation which may impact business.

Both internal and external factors can affect image of Brands for which you may be accountable in an organization. At that time qualities of leadership, decision making process, situation handling can make you succeed. What is the 1st Step at GD?

GD is the buzz word which is top of mind with MBA aspirants at present time as most of business schools are conducting GD to select students. All those who have valid scores of MBA entrance tests are invited for GD session. 

In fact, GD is the second opportunity to showcase your skills and convey as to why you should be selected. If the subject needs clarification you must not hesitate to request panel to explain the topics once more as that will open new dimension for you to convey your mind set.

Why WAT or Written Ability Test?

New IIMs have started new pattern of testing candidate on WAT or Written Ability Test. Since test prep institutes over a period of time have guided MBA aspirants in such a way that GD looks more of stereo typed shouting platform or some call it fish market place. Off course it sounds derogatory but in reality it is really difficult to judge candidate’s potential on leadership qualities.

Why to fear at PI?

PI is almost added with GD and is final hurdle to be in a B School. PI has its own implications as the moment you sometime are not able to perform; chances of rejection can be anticipated. With those thoughts you get further alienated and get in loop of uncertainty.

Most of the time PI is a test for studying the state of mind. Circumstances at a particular day / time can spoil the show for you so come what may, it is must for you to be strong mentally and keep calm within you.

Reading beyond books is a habit which is in fact a very useful tactics to cover up your inhibitions on the day. Personal Interview (PI) is in reality comprises one to one show and the more you showcase your qualities, it would be better. Positive attitude is the panacea to clear PI successfully.

Why MBA is required?

Some students who are in final year of their graduation do get placements in companies with good package. This phenomenon is happening in some good UG colleges at all India level. 

After having got job both the placed and fellow students who aspire to be placed think that it is over and they have achieved moon. In fact this is not reality rather life has just begun towards scaling many a mountains of life. 

It will be good to mull over joining higher education in MBA domain as that will facilitate you to understand business of your company in much more efficient way.  Pursuing MBA after having work experience is preferred as you are able to relate your education with your work.
