With CAT you can’t take chance

CAT 2013 is hardly 3 months near and focused aspirants like you are on preparation. Exam will be conducted in coming October.

In absence of any specified syllabus CAT is always a puzzle to crack. Only trends of yesteryears exams can get you some idea but since for the last 3 years CAT has become computer based exam, it is difficult to recall questions. 

Wrong answers also deduct allotted numbers and make CAT much more difficult. 

 

Nature of exam is to test your analytical skills in a stipulated time frame. Guessing answers is suicidal in CAT. 

CAT can’t be taken with chances which might be with those who prepare for exam thoroughly and each section of CAT viz; DI/QA/LR/VA is well understood and practiced with Mock Tests.

Nature of XAT exam

XAT usually comprises 3 Objective type Multiple Choice sections and an essay writing section. 

1. Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation (Math) - (Objective Type Multiple Choice)
2. Verbal Reasoning (English) - (Objective Type Multiple Choice)
3. Analytical Reasoning and Decision Making - (Objective Type Multiple Choice)
4. And an essay writing section

The duration of the test is 120 minutes for the objective type section and an additional 20 minutes is provided at the end of the 2 hours for the essay writing section.

In order to crack XAT, you should first know how the exam is different from others. In XAT, the Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation questions are in one section. 

The second section is English Usage (EU) and RC. The third section is Analytical Reasoning (AR) and Decision Making.

CAT 2012 is continuing on an expected pattern

CAT aspirants who have taken exam have claimed that CAT 2012 is continuing on an expected pattern with 30 questions in each section (QA/ DI and VA / LR) and 70 minutes available for each section.

Over a couple of years computer based test is looking similar because of the fact  that in first year they had many glitches and then exam conducting authority is of the view to keep the exam simple so that aspirants feel good but naturally competition will remain tough as scores will be considered on percentile basis.

Aspirants might feel a bit relaxed but serious candidates like you know that after short listing a call letter from IIM will herald another tougher test on WAT/ PI hence, after getting free, sooner you start practice for second leg of exam, it will be better.

Engineers are more in numbers for taking CAT 2012

It has been reported in the media that more than 68% Engineers are the CAT 2012 aspirants. That means from other streams like arts, humanities, commerce and science students are not coming forward to go for MBA Education. 

It looks that MBA in general has got beating in the market and engineers in any case are professional with their basic degree of engineering and when they opt for MBA education it is perceived that they would be professionally qualified for niche industry. 

Historically CAT has been skewed for engineers as they do well in DI / QA section but many a times they land in tight situation for LR / VA.

For the last couple of years IIMs have been discussing to make some changes in forthcoming CAT to change the pattern a bit so that aspirants from other streams can also be motivated to take the exam and this may happen from CAT 2013 onwards.

CAT will continue to be unpredictable

It is well said that all that which is predictable can’t be termed as exam. The same is much true for CAT as this exam is supposed to be most tough for MBA aspirants and sets parameter for all other exams. 

Since aspirants take exam on different dates and at different shifts with different sets of exam hence, CAT becomes  much more unpredictable. 

Nature of exam is as such that you are tested on abilities on your analytical skills in sections of DI/ QA rather on your knowledge. 

Likewise you are tested for your comprehending power and speed in LR/ VA 

Off course in absence of any prescribed syllabus CAT will continue to be as tough and will never be predictable.

For succeeding in CAT you need to be regular in practice with perseverance.
