CAT 2012: Essential Points to be considered while writing essay

The importance of essays in the selection procedure of IIMs is known to all. Here we are discussing few points that student should consider while writing essays.

Be yourself in your essays
Do not assume personalities based on what you think a particular B School wants from you. Many of you may not realize this but an essay smells of a personality always. If someone is reading 4- 5 essays about you, he can feel what kind of personality you are and his sixth sense will spot all the inconsistencies and false portrayals. If you be yourself in your essays, you will invariably avoid these inconsistencies.

Be Interesting
People don’t care whether you're good or evil. But no one will forgive you for being boring. Funny but true!! So be interesting in your essays. You don’t have to be a creative writer to do this. Imagine that you are going to tell something interesting about yourself to your friends. Then think about how you would narrate it. And then write it down.

Show the person that you are
It is very strange that many students do not realize that B-Schools genuinely want to know them as a person. They want to know what choices you have made in life and why. Essays are personal statements you can make about yourself. Keep your essays full of insight about yourself. Don’t keep your essays so superficial that someone reading them doesn’t have a clue about you. For this to happen, you need to go through a lot of introspection about yourself. The sooner you start the better.

Stay focused
While answering an essay question, do not wander into details that are irrelevant to the essay. Keep your focus and include only those details which are crucial for building your essay.

CAT 2012: Understanding VA Section

The Verbal Ability Section of CAT 2012 will give you an opportunity to score high percentile in this particular section as well as in CAT 2012. However, preparation matters a lot if you wish to score high in this section. The Verbal Ability part tests your grasp on English language, and your ability to understand written words in the Reading Comprehension section.

The verbal ability section used to have high weight in paper based test of CAT till 2008. Since 2009, when the Common Admission Test turned computer based, the two sections, i.e. Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation and Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning started getting equal weightage.

The cutoff of the VA section is gaining momentum as this section went through various changes over the past few years.

The number of Verbal Ability questions which were 25 out of 75 questions in 2007, increased to 40 out of 90 questions in 2008 increasing the percentage and making CAT a little moderate but still tough enough. It has been since 2009 that the Verbal Ability questions have remained at 20 out of 60 and have become moderately tough to attempt.

CAT 2012: Tips for Geometry, Coordinate Geometry and Menstruation

Geometry, Coordinate Geometry and Menstruation are grouped together since they deal with the portion of QA that can be visualized. Of the three, maximum weightage is given to geometry, although every CAT paper will have 3-4 questions on mensuration, as well as a couple of questions on coordinate geometry, totaling about 25-30% of questions in the QA section.
Topics that need to be covered in geometry are basic theorems involving triangles, circles and parallel lines. A common type of question that is often asked in CAT is to find the value of certain angles or length of certain sides. Therefore, make sure that you cover topics such as congruency and similarity of triangles.
The only things that you need to do in coordinate geometry are straight lines and circles. Given the equation of a circle, you should be able to comment on the centre and radius of the circle and draw it on a piece of graph paper, and nothing more. Similarly, you should know what the slope and y-intercept of a given straight line equation is, and be able to draw the line on a piece of graph paper.

For mensuration, flip through a school level textbook for basic formulae on areas, surface areas and volumes of triangles, circles, cylinders, cones, cuboids and spheres. Mensuration problems are calculation intensive, and require lots of practice.

Get on to preparation and practice that will achieve you mission CAT 2012
