CAT 2012 Preparation: Tips for a Better Score in QA

To simplify, in general QA can be divided there are about four categories:

CATEGORY-1: GEOMETRY, CATEGORY-2: ALGEBRA AND NUMBER THEORY, CATEGORY-3: ARITHMATIC OPERATIONS, CATEGORY-4: LOGICAL PROBLEMS
  1. Develop strong fundamentals for each of the above mentioned categories. Remember if you leave any section untouched it will affect other questions also because you will find that in CAT most of the times the question requires understanding of concepts of two different areas.
  2. Practice, practice and practice. Yes, there is no alternative to practice for scoring well in this section. The more you practice the more you get acquainted to the formulae and large variety of questions. So, practice is must for this section.
  3. Gain mastery in one of the category and try to develop high speed in this category. This will enable you to score good in minimum time than others.
  4. While learning, focus on concepts and not on formulae. Try to formulate your own equations based on the understanding of questions.
  5. Always judge the question before attempting the section and try to find out the easy ones on the basis of your skills, ability and strengths. Some problems which may be easy for others may also be hard for you and vice versa. So go by your perception only.
Stick to above and practice to achieve mission CAT 2012.

CAT 2012 Preparation: Manage your anxiety

More than anything else, the CAT is a test of your nerves. There are hundreds of brilliant students who score MUCH lower in the CAT than they do in their practice tests. It is important to manage your test anxiety.

Compare & Discard: This is immensely useful for the Reading Comprehension section of the CAT Exam

While there may be a 'Perfect' answer to a question, it may not appear as one of the options. What you need to do is compare the different answer choices and choose the best one available. In fact you can usually zero down on two choices and discard the ones that are distinctly different from these two.

Use Short-cuts only when necessary: It is extremely important to be aware of all the possible shortcuts that are available to you; however, these are to be used only if you are unable to apply the ‘regular’ methods.

SWOT will help you to analyze your Strengths & Weaknesses and create a study plan unique to you.

The important thing here is NOT to ignore your strengths, and to stick to your study plan and achieve mission CAT 2012.

CAT 2012 Preparation: Avoid the common pitfalls

Before you go on to the CAT Study Material and start giving Mock Tests, here are a few common Pitfalls that you avoid and some basic strategies that will help you get a higher CAT score.

Always Remember, the obvious answer is the Wrong Answer
With the number of questions going down, there are hardly any 'sitter' questions in the recent CATs. The obvious answer (the one you can guess without spending much time on), is likely to be the wrong one, so be careful.

Guess if you can eliminate at least ONE answer
You need to invest some time on all questions, so while you are going through the questions, do NOT become emotionally involved with any of them. And even if you think the questions is outrageously difficult or outright incorrect, just try to eliminate at least one answer, guess and move on if you are not feeling confident about it.

Keep track of the time
Certain questions by their very nature take more time to answer. The first step to better time management is to recognize these questions.

While doing your practice tests, try to become more aware of how much time you have taken to answer a question. You will soon begin to develop an Internal Clock that will help you meet the pacing requirements of the CAT and reduce test anxiety.

Strategy for CAT 2012

Which section, whether it is English, Quantitative Ability or Data Interpretation, you are going to attempt in the beginning, followed by which section and which in the end. Within these sections, what will be your order of attempting the various types of questions? For example, within the English section, will you do Reading Comprehension first or begin with the Verbal Ability part?

What is your time allocation strategy? How much time do you plan to spend on each of the sections? In particular, do you plan to devote equal time to each section or slightly more time to the section that you are the strongest at?

How will you respond to a differential marking scheme if that is specified? For example, if there are 2 mark and 1 mark questions, do you plan to attempt the 2 mark questions first? (You never know, when the CAT pattern is changed without any notification!)

Do you plan to spend some time at the completion of the exam, cross-checking or verifying some of the answers, especially of those questions that you are not really sure of and have just estimated or guessed the answer?

You must understand that CAT is not impossible to crack. People have done it before and will continue to do it, so why not you? You just need to continue systematic preparation and CAT could be probably one of the easiest tests to crack.
